4.Officers of the Month
Congratulations to the Macon Police Department officers selected as tops in the department during the past four months:
February - Property Investigator Jay Touchton
Investigator Touchton's interrogation skills and pursuit of leads resulted in double figures for felony arrests for the month of February. These charges included six commercial burglaries and five residential burglaries.
March - Officer Brian Powell, Precinct 3
Officer Powell’s observations, while on patrol, led him to stop a car matching the description of a vehicle that had fled the scene of an earlier burglary. After questioning and a search of the vehicle, the suspects were charged with several commercial burglaries. Additionally, Officer Powell’s quick response to a burglary in progress on Log Cabin Drive resulted in an arrest at the scene.
April - Officer Jason Kellum, CID
On April 21, Officer Kellum, along with his K-9 partner “Rita”, initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for failure to maintain lanes. A search of the vehicle revealed 4 kilos (10 pounds) of powder cocaine with a street value of approximately $452,000.00. This drug confiscation was one of the largest in MPD history. Rita is more than man's best friend - she's an officer's best friend. Rita is a Belgian Malanois (pronounced mal-in-wa).
May - Investigator Shatekia Mitchell
Investigator Mitchell’s investigative workload included several arson cases, terrorist threats and stalking. These cases resulted in several thousand dollars worth of damage to property, and a direct threat to the safety of others. Her investigation of these cases resulted in case closure. In addition, while on patrol, Investigator Mitchell observed a burglary in progress and apprehended a suspect at the scene.
